You know how we as a culture obsessively rub our hands with Purell and flinch violently when someone starts sneezing or hacking around us? OK, well, Blu-ray Bob does, and he knows he’s not the only one. Now imagine what would happen if the military accidentally released a deadly biological weapon on a small town, and you’ve got the premise of 1973’s The Crazies, a movie in which you can’t trust the government and your contaminated neighbors might give you more than just a runny nose if you let them get too close.
Romero’s contagious pre-Purell shocker has been available on DVD for some time, but Blue Underground thinks the low-budget film deserves a Blu-ray upgrade on February 23. Even though The Crazies was made on a crazy low budget of $275,000, expect the company to somehow pull a 1080p transfer and DTS-HD Master Audio out of it. The BD will also include a commentary by Romero, an interview with cult-film star Lynn Lowry, plus theatrical trailers and TV spots.
Three days after this BD is released, the epidemic will spread when the 2010 The Crazies remake starring Timothy Olyphant is released in theaters. Something tells me the timing is not a crazy coincidence.
