Geek Buzz: New 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Toys, 'Silver & Black' Writers, 'Call of Duty' Director Revealed

Feb 14, 2018

Happy Valentine's Day to all the geeks out there, for whom we have a few sweet news nuggets. Check out bites involving Star Wars, Marvel and the video game Call of Duty below.

Solo: A Star Wars Story toys first look

The next Star Wars movie doesn't come out until May, but fresh looks at toys based on Solo: A Star Wars Story have arrived. The Hollywood Reporter shared some views of a new Lego set licensed from the standalone prequel: minifigs of Han Solo, Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian join a relatively new-looking Millennium Falcon, which is a bit less intricate and less costly than last year's enormous Lego Falcon set.

Meanwhile, io9 has the exclusive first look at Hasbro's Solo: A Star Wars Story action figures, consisting of Han (Alden Ehrenreich), Lando (Donald Glover), Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) and the Imperial Range Trooper. Hasbro also has its own Solo version Millennium Falcon playset toy, as well. Those should all be available this Spring ahead of the movie's Memorial Day weekend release.

Beyond the Lights

Silver & Black gets new screenwriters

We're also months away from seeing how Sony does with its Spider-Man-free Spidey universe films with the release of Venom, but the next effort is heating up with some excellent additional talent. Silver & Black, the team up of Marvel Comics antihero characters Silver Sable and Black Cat, has gotten a script rewrite from Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain MarvelTomb Raider) and Lindsey Beer (BarbieChaos Walking -- the latter starring new Spidey Tom Holland), according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The two women worked off the previous draft of the movie penned by Gina Prince-Bythewood (above, Beyond the Lights), who will now do another polish on what they've contributed. Thor: Ragnarok writers (and Westworld creators) Chris Yost and Lisa Joy worked on earlier versions of the script. Silver & Black is expected to begin filming in Atlanta fairly soon and will open in theaters less than a year from now, on February 8, 2019.

Call of Duty lands a director

The video game adaptation Call of Duty is moving forward despite not having a distributor set up. According to Variety, the war movie will be directed by Stefano Sollima, who will work with writer Kieran Fitzgerald (Snowden) to polish his existing script. Sollima has experience delivering projects spawned from others' work, having helmed the Gomorrah series and the upcoming sequel Sicario 2: Soldado (watch the trailer below). Activision Blizzard Studios aims to turn Call of Duty into a major cinematic universe-size film franchise.

Last year we heard via producer Stacey Sher (Django UnchainedThe Hateful Eight) that there were already numerous Call of Duty movie plots written for this hopeful enterprise, though details are still being kept under wraps. All that's known is that one of the movies will deal with Black Ops. The first installment is likely still years away, so we might not learn much more than that for a while.
