When the folks at Sony announced an additional three Spider-Man movies with a fourth set to hit theaters in 2018, we all thought that was pretty aggressive and forward thinking of them to plan that far out. Well Marvel maestro Kevin Feige just threw down the gauntlet in a new interview with Wired magazine, saying they're thinking even further down the line. "I could arguably say what we're planning for the year 2021. Will that happen? I don't know. But what we planned for 2015 in 2006 is happening." Boom shakalaka!
And here we thought Phase Three was still being figured out. Heck, Marvel is on like Phase Eight or Nine! Feige added that it all comes down to their ability to launch other characters in their own solo movies instead of being forced to put all their stock in Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, the Hulk and those Avengers. "Five years ago, looking at our plan, we knew that if Avengers was going to work, the movies had to stand alone. Now we have to prove to the studio that we're more than just these five characters, these five franchises."
So what other characters might we see on the big screen? Well Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters next year, and then Ant-Man (directed by Edgar Wright) will most likely be the first Marvel movie following The Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. After that we'll probably see a Dr. Strange movie and maybe even a Black Panther movie. Expect Marvel to build something bigger around the Hulk as well. Of course this isn't counting the various sequels Marvel will squeeze in for its ongoing properties, like a third Thor and Captain America movie, as well as more Avengers films.
