From 'After Earth' to 'Bullet to the Head,' These Are the Biggest Box Office Bombs of 2013

Dec 23, 2013

We’ve been busy rounding up the best of the 2013 movie season, but since we don’t want to discriminate against cinema’s stinkers, we’d like to draw your attention to the biggest box office bombs of this year, which website Hitfix recently highlighted.

"It's been almost, like, two decades since I had a movie that wasn’t number one! ... That's over now, buddy! Thanks!” Will Smith told Jimmy Kimmel with regards to his summer flop After Earth. The unholy trinity of Smith, son Jaden and director M. Night Shyamalan didn’t fly with audiences. Or maybe people read Jaden’s Twitter account…

It seemed that even Twilight fans were tired of the imitators, and Beautiful Creatures — a clear attempt to target the teen paranormal-romance crowd with clumsy results — wasn’t able to woo them. It’s possible to make a movie driven by greed and box office numbers alone, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be any good.

Can’t remember The Big Wedding? Blocked another Katherine Heigl movie from your memory? We can’t blame you. Poor Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton costarred in this box office catastrophe, which opened a mere week before Iron Man 3. Not a great marketing plan, guys. Despite an A-list ensemble cast, the story and funny just weren’t there.

Apparently Hollywood decided that people needed more Sylvester Stallone in their lives, and Bullet to the Head was released. The movie was delayed for a year, and Stallone’s goofy Expendables series had already exhausted the actor’s appeal. Meanwhile, Closed Circuit — an Eric Bana thriller — seemed to simply have awkward timing.

For you brave souls out there, head to Hitfix for more box office turkeys.
