Watch: The New International Trailer for 'Fright Night' Debuts Online

Jul 27, 2011

Fright Night remake posterWhen the first trailer for the remake of the cult classic horror flick Fright Night debuted earlier this year, reactions were mixed. As was to be expected, there was a vocal contingent of fans of the original who were nonplussed by a remake (I was one of them), and the first clip didn’t do much to change their tune.

Luckily, Dreamworks has now unveiled a new international trailer (which made its debut at Empire Online) – and while we suspect hardcore fans may still need more convincing about the merits of a Fright Night redux, at least this new clip is an improvement over the first.

The new trailer opens like a million other teen comedies, with Charlie (Anton Yelchin) and his friend Evil Ed (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) going to school, exchanging sarcastic banter, and so on. About halfway through, though, the clip switches gears and becomes much more like a horror movie – with Charlie squaring off against his vampire neighbor, played by Colin Farrell. While the purists love Chris Sarandon’s portrayal of the villainous Jerry in the original, Farrell looks like a solid replacement in the updating.

The jury’s still out on the new Peter Vincent, played by Dr. Who’s David Tennant. This new clip gives us our first good look at Charlie’s vampire-killing mentor (now a Vegas illusionist instead of a late night horror host), but it’s not enough of a glimpse to really decide if the changes are good ones. Tennant is trying to fill some huge shoes – Roddy McDowall’s work in the original Fright Night is classic.

That being said, the international trailer has us feeling more hopeful about this remake. We won’t know for sure if the Fright Night updating is a success until it hits theaters next month, but if this new footage is any indication, it’s not shaping up to be a complete disaster, either. Check it out then share your thoughts in the comment section.
