Pixar's lock on the market for movies featuring zany animated critters having goofy adventures might be lessening just a bit, thanks to a new kid on the block. Sony Pictures Animation had a surprise $120 million hit with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, a movie about a contraption that causes cheeseburgers and other edibles to fall from the sky until it starts to malfunction, unleashing spaghetti tornadoes and giant meatballs that threaten the world. Based on yet another beloved children’s book, the CG-animated flick features the voices of Bill Hader, Anna Faris, James Caan, Mr. T and Neil Patrick Harris—the latter two names of which Blu-ray Bob bets you never expected to hear in the same sentence.
It’ll be a literal food storm of Meatballs on January 5 when Sony releases several versions of the movie, including a one-disc DVD with the director’s and Hader’s commentary and a two-disc super-size DVD that also includes a making-of featurette, a look at the voice cast, deleted scenes, a music video and interactive sing-along for “Raining Sunshine,” and the Food Fight game where you pilot a spaceship and try to avoid flying pizzas and gummy bears. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack has a more enhanced version of Food Fight and something called “Splat! Mode” that lets your little angels throw virtual food at the screen while they watch the movie. Adorable, right? Teaching your kids the consequences of “Splat! Mode” as they throw their actual dinners at the TV set is up to you, parental units. Blu-ray Bob helpfully suggests a double feature with Where the Wild Things Are for a real night of mixed messages and obnoxious-behavior imprinting.
