First Viral Video for M. Night Shyamalan's 'After Earth' Makes Full Use of Facebook Timeline Technology

It’s been a few years since M. Night Shyamalan’s disastrous live-action version of The Last Airbender, but the filmmaker is back with a glimpse at his newest sci-fi project -- After Earth (formerly known as 1000 A.E.)

Will and Jaden Smith star in the feature, which is set roughly a thousand years after mankind has to flee an inhospitable Earth for a new home. General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and his son Kitai (Jaden Smith) find themselves caught in an asteroid storm that damages their ship – forcing them crash-land on the “unfamiliar and dangerous Earth.”

With the general seriously injured, it’s up to Kitai to cross the deadly terrain to recover their rescue beacon and save his father.

That sounds sort of interesting, which makes it at least a little disappointing that this viral video is just a Facebook Timeline clip featuring the history of Earth’s demise and the move to a new world. Really, Shyamalan…a Facebook Timeline video?

The other potential issue here is that the synopsis sure does make it sound like we’ll be focusing more on Jaden Smith than Will. Not sure that’s really the way to go.

We’ll withhold judgment about After Earth until we see a trailer featuring footage of the stars (Can they get Jada Pinkett Smith and Willow in there somehow? Maybe Willow Smith can do the closing credits track or something…), but what do you think? Is this the movie that might finally get Shyamalan back into your good graces or have you reached the point where the mere mention of his name makes you avoid films? Let us know below.

After Earth is slated to hit theaters on June 7, 2013.
