First Look: Will 'Magic Magic' Mark Michael Cera's Big-Screen Comeback?

Dec 14, 2012

It's been two years since Michael Cera appeared on the big screen. His role as lovelorn hero Scott Pilgrim in Edgar Wright's adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was a box office stinker, despite being a fan favorite. That said, it seems that Cera's "comeback" will hinge on his next project, and it looks like that movie will be playing at the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. A press release from the prestigious event indicates that Cera will make his world premiere appearance in Magic Magic, written and directed by Sebastián Silva.
The story finds Alice (Juno Temple) as an American girl on vacation with friends in remote Chile. She slowly starts to mentally unravel. Her best friend (Emily Browning) returns to Santiago, but things start becoming increasingly unhinged. Magic Magic also costars Catalina Sandino Moreno and Augustín Silva. The Playlist has some new photos of Cera's character (swathed in a fur coat with dyed black hair) along with a few others, seen below.
Although we don't know much about Cera's role, his two-year absence speaks volumes. The meek, mumbling shtick of Cera's man-boy persona is a stale routine at this point, even if it's what put him in the spotlight. Niche, indie parts seem to be the next step in Cera's evolution, so we're honestly glad he took a break and is resurfacing in something completely different. Maybe he'll be able to pull a John C. Reilly (from goofball to Cannes in We Need to Talk About Kevin). Check out a few other Sundance additions, below. There's Rubber director Quentin Dupieux's new film starring Marilyn Manson, and a rerelease of Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi amongst them.
