First Look: Danny Boyle's Art-Heist Thriller 'Trance'

USA Today has new photos from the set of Danny Boyle's art-heist thriller Trance. James McAvoy (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) and Rosario Dawson (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) star in the 127 Hours director's updating of a shadowy film genre. "It takes the idea of a stolen painting and develops into something sleeker and more psychological, with twists and turns," Boyle told the paper. "I wanted to do an updated noir, give it a contemporary spin in terms of emotion. Noir is usually cold. I wanted it to be more emotionally charged. It's the first time I put a woman at the heart of a movie."

Dawson is that woman and she plays a "charismatic hypnotherapist" who tries to locate a stolen painting by inducing McAvoy's fine art auctioneer, Simon, who has fallen in with an underworld boss named Franck (Cassel). "But as they journey deeper into Simon's jumbled psyche the boundaries between reality and hypnotic suggestion begin to blur and the stakes rise faster and far more dangerously than any of the players could have anticipated," the official film synopsis tells us. The director has also compared the film to his 1994 movie Shallow Grave — about a trio of friends, their dead roommate and a pile of cash. "Their only point of reference is to each other. There are no outsiders," the director stated.

Check out the photos, and tell us if you're ready to enter the criminal art world with Boyle. [USA Today]
