Yesterday brought us our first look at the final Hobbit movie, There and Back Again, and now today brings us our first look at the second Hobbit movie, The Desolation of Smaug, due in theaters on December 13, 2013. We're not sure why the images were released in that backwards order, but it doesn't really matter now that we have them. Here, we see Bilbo (Martin Freeman) climbing atop a mound of gold that's currently in the possession of one fire-breathing dragon named Smaug.
While those familiar with the story of The Hobbit might look at a scene like this as the conclusion of the story, it's not. Remember the reason why they extended The Hobbit to three films was so that Peter Jackson and company could inject some of those 120 pages of appendices that Tolkien wrote, elaborating on the entire story. "The dragon is a huge, wonderful, amazing part of the story, but it doesn't end there," screenwriter and producer Philippa Boyens told EW. "Everyone can suspect there's a rather large battle in film three."
In case you missed it yesterday, here's the first image from the third Hobbit movie, There and Back Again.
And just so everyone gets in on the action, here's a new image from The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey featuring Gandalf approaching the Goblin King.
