First 'Venom' Photo Arrives as Production Begins: Here's Everything We Know

Oct 24, 2017

Sony kicked off its next cinematic universe this week, as Venom began production in Atlanta on Monday. The comic book movie, focused on the titular Spider-Man supervillain, marked the occasion with a photo from the set, shared via Twitter.

The image, seen below, features Tom Hardy, who'll be playing Eddie Brock, aka Venom, and that's probably director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) in the back wearing his Baltimore Orioles cap. They appear to be having some sort of production meeting.

Here's all that we know about the movie so far:

What is Venom about?

We don't know, as the plot is being kept under wraps. But the basic information to know is that Venom is a monstrous villain involving alien symbiote that takes over its host in the form of a suit. Brock, who in the comics was a photographer for the Daily Bugle, became the symbiote's host after Peter Parker/Spider-Man.

Will Spider-Man be in the movie?

No, despite Venom being based on a character from the Spider-Man universe of Marvel Comics, the movie is the start of a series that's sort of Spidey-adjacent but Spidey-less. There will be no crossover with Sony's new Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Marvel's Captain America: Civil War.

Who else will we see in Venom?

Oscar nominee Michelle Williams, Veep's Reid Scott, comedic actress Jenny Slate and Riz Ahmed of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story have all been cast, but nothing substantial is known of their roles. Williams is reportedly playing a district attorney but has also recently been rumored to be Brock's ex-wife, Ann Weying, who turns into She-Venom.

Slate's character has simply been described as a scientist, while Ahmed's part was only said to be "a popular Marvel Comics character." But despite speculative assumptions, he's apparently not playing fellow Spidey nemesis Carnage.

Are any other rumors about the plot floating around?

In the past, speculation was made that Venom could be based on the limited series "Venom on Trial" because of the initial reports of who Williams is playing. Recently, fans are guessing it will instead be based on "Lethal Protector," the comic miniseries that first saw Venom as an antihero rather than villain.

Of course, the movie doesn't have to be an adaptation of any existing comics storyline. And since there have been multiple script changes, with the latest draft being penned by Kelly Marcel (50 Shades of Grey), seen in the top photo with Hardy, anything heard in the past could have changed.

When does Venom come out?

In less than a year, on October 5, 2018.
