A few years ago several studios set a course to cash in on the young adult fantasy void that would eventually be left by Harry Potter. 20th Century Fox placed its bet on Rick Riordan's ongoing Percy Jackson and the Olympians series of novels. And it paid off. Kind of.
The first film, 2010's The Lightning Thief, didn't do too hot here in the States. Most dismissed the film about the adventures of the teenaged children of mythological gods, and the result was a disappointing $88 million haul. It fared better on a global scale, though, and so Fox eventually gave the series' second book, Sea of Monsters, a green light and handed directorial duties on to Diary of a Wimpy Kid director Thor Freudenthal.
As you'll see in the first trailer for the film, Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson), Alexandra Daddario (Annabeth Chase), and Brandon T. Jackson (Grover Underwood) are all back for the sequel, and they're joined by some welcome adult faces like Stanley Tucci (Dionysus) and Nathan Fillion (Hermes). The plot this time involves Percy and his gang having to head into the Sea of Monsters to find the Golden Fleece that'll protect their hidden world. If you didn't like the first film, this one seems to be off to a better start. It's not saddled with having to be an origin story, which looks like it's freed things up to be more of a straight teen adventure movie.
Check out the trailer below and let us know if it's everything you wanted from a sequel, or if it's everything you dreaded in one.
