First 'Kindergarten Cop 2' Trailer - Dolph Lundgren Takes Over for Arnold Schwarzenegger

Kindergarten Cop

Update 2/16/15: We now have a trailer for Kindergarten Cop 2 starring Dolph Lundgren. It's just a tad silly.

Update 8/13/15: The new Kindergarten Cop is apparently already filming in Vancouver, with Dolph Lundgren stepping in to the oversized shoes once filled by Arnold Schwazenegger. We don't actually know if he's playing Detective John Kimble or a different cop, but we do know that he has to infilitrate a kindergarten class to find a kid who is in the federal witness protection program. And not only that, but he's going to have an Indian sidekick named Sanjit this time around, which sounds amazingly antiquated in a '90s Saturday morning cartoon kind of way.

Previously 6/15/15: A remake of the 1990 comedy Kindergarten Cop is on its way, but Arnold Schwarzenegger will not be starring in the new version.

The original followed on the heels of Twins, which established the 1980s action star as a capable comic performer -- at least when teamed with Danny DeVito! That unlikely pairing was a great selling point for Twins, and expanded the possibilities for Schwarzenegger, who'd starred in a string of macho action blockbusters until then. He promptly reestablished his action credentials with the great, exceedingly violent Total Recall, which made Kindergarten Cop all the more surprising when it hit theaters a few months later.

Schwarzenegger plays Detective John Kimble, who is pursuing an especially villainous drug dealer, and ends up going undercover as a substitute teacher at an elementary school when his partner (Pamela Reed) gets food poisoning. The idea is to pick up clues from the drug dealer's son and his mother, but it turns out to be much more fun to watch Schwarzenegger show his gentle side as he's overpowered by the busy antics of a classroom full of 5-year-old children.

Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters) directed, although he won't be returning for the remake either. Instead, the remake, which is intended for the home entertainment market, will be directed by Don Michael Paul (Jarhead 2: Field of Fire), based on a new script by David H. Steinberg (American Pie 2). According to The Wrap, The remake will team a police detective with "an Indian sidekick named Sanjit" and the villains will be Albanian criminals rather than drug dealers.

Since the remake won't be heading to theaters, the budget won't allow the casting of a big-name star like Dwayne Johnson, though we remain curious about who will be replacing Arnold Schwarzenegger. Maybe Dave Bautista (Guardian of the Galaxy)? John Cena (12 Rounds)? 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin (The Expendables)? Who would be your pick?
