The First 'CHIPS' Trailer Chases the '21 Jump Street' Beat

In retrospect, 21 Jump Street may have been one of the most influential movies of the last five years. It launched directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller's career as live-action directors (they'd been in animation up until that point), and now they're doing the young Han Solo movie. It proved that R-rated action comedies could still be smart, creative and drive huge box office numbers, helping open the door for a wave of movies like The Heat, Spy and Deadpool. And it also gave other studios a blueprint to follow for how to reboot old TV shows on the big screen.

This year we'll see that blueprint followed twice in Baywatch and CHIPS. We've already gotten a few trailers for the former (even though it comes out second), but now we've got our first look at the latter, which stars Dax Shepard and Michael Peña as two bumbling California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers more likely to cause an accident than to prevent one.

Shepard also wrote and directed CHIPS, which based on this first trailer is taking the late '70s TV show and giving it a '90s sense of humor with an early 2000s action style. Check it out.

CHiPs hits theaters on March 24, 2017.
