Final 'Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets' Trailer Is Colorful, Wild and Thrilling

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

When it was first announced two years ago, Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets immediately reminded us of Besson's own The Fifth Element. It's based on a French graphic novel that follows two time travel agents who go on fantastical adventures. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne were cast as the time travel agents

Amazingly, the first trailer, released last November, lived up to our expectations, resembling The Fifth Element on steroids, a wildly imaginative sci-fi adventure full of colorful creatures, characters and worlds. The cast includes Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu and Rihanna, who takes on several different personas in the movie.

The second trailer showcased the amazingly varied worlds in which the movie is set, as well as providing a closer look at some of the alien creatures that will be featured. We also got more of a taste of the characters played by DeHaan and Delevigne.

Now the third and final trailer supplies a more concise exploration of the movie, focusing on the stakes that are involved and the dangers that will be faced by the time travel agents.

Watch it below.

While the previous trailers almost felt leisurely, the new trailer emphasizes that the agents only have 10 hours to complete their mission and eliminate a threat that sounds quite ominous. It's also a reminder that Besson is a very experienced action director; after all, even before The Fifth Element, he made the action-packed La Femme Nikita and The Professional.

More recently, he directed Scarlett Johansson in Lucy, a dynamic thriller, so obviously he's well-equipped to deliver a colorful, wildly imaginative sci-fi spectacle that includes a series of kinetic action sequences. DeHaan is primed to break out as a major star in a blockbuster and Delevingne is a very promising young actress who's ready to make a deep impression.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will open in theaters on July 21.
