Final 'The Predator' Trailer Lets the Dogs Out; Here's Everything We Know

The Predator

Cover yourself in mud and get to the choppah, because The Predator is on its way. The fourth movie in the series about lethal alien "space hunters" -- or sixth if we count the Alien vs. Predator crossovers -- looks to be a very different take on a property that began with Arnold Schwarzenegger in the jungles of South America in 1987.

Ahead of the movie's release, Fox has released one more final trailer, and it's a lot lighter in tone than what we've seen before. Funny, even. Sterling K. Brown is clearly going to be the highlight of this installment. The new spot also features a lot of Predator action plus Predator Dogs. Check it out at the bottom of the post.

Here's everything we know about The Predator so far:

How does The Predator connect to the other movies in the series?

This installment reportedly takes place between the events of Predator 2, which came out in 1990 but is set in 1997, and Robert Rodriguez's Predators, which was both released and set in 2010, albeit on another planet. However, the movie is also just said to be set in the present day.

Unlike the previous sequel, which involved humans being kidnapped and dropped on an alien planet, this one sees the return of the Predators (aka the Yuatja) to Earth, and for a direct link features the son of Jake Busey's government agent character from the Los Angeles-set Predator 2.

How will it differ from what we've seen before?

This time, the Yuatja are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever. They also have a new, upgraded style of armor. Apparently, they've genetically altered themselves using DNA from other species. Will that mean we'll get another hybrid with a Xenomorph (aka a Predalien) as we saw in the Alien vs. Predator movies? Probably not, but who knows?

The Predator is being sold as a bit of a reinvention of the property, so we can expect a good amount of fresh ideas, including the "Ultimate Predator," a version of the alien "sports hunters" that's bigger and badder than any we've seen in the franchise so far. The makers of the sequel aimed to make an event movie that also has a more intimate scope, a la the original.

What is the plot this time?

The Predator centers around an intelligent 12-year-old autistic boy, who accidentally triggers the return of the Yuatja. This time they arrive in the kid's suburban neighborhood. On hand to take on the alien hunters, and presumably get picked off one by one in franchise tradition, is a disgruntled science teacher and a "ragtag" group of ex-soldiers.

Who plays the boy (and why is there a little boy in a Predator movie)?

Jacob Tremblay, one of his generation's finest child actors, known for his starring roles in Room, Before I Wake, The Book of Henry, and last year's heartwarming hit Wonder. Given that this installment focuses on a preteen kid in the suburbs, The Predator could be going for an '80s throwback Gremlins and Critters sort of thing, only with larger creatures.

Who else stars in the movie?

Olivia Munn plays the science teacher, who joins forces with Boyd Holbrook (Logan) as the boy's ex-Marine father. Other members of their Predator-fighting team include fellow ex-Marines played by Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) and Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), plus a PTSD-suffering military vet played by Thomas Jane and a non-military recruit played by Keegan-Michael Key (Keanu).

There's also Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) as a government agent, Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica) as a military leader, Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid's Tale) as the boy's mother and Jake Busey, who plays the aforementioned son of his own father's character from 28 years ago.

Who wrote and directed The Predator?

Iron Man 3 helmer Shane Black, who was part of the onscreen ensemble of the original Predator as the character Hawkins, came up with the idea for this installment and also directed the movie. Black collaborated with filmmaker Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad) on the script, which, knowing Black's work, probably involves Christmas in some way.

When can we see the movie?

The Predator arrives in theaters on September 14.
