Despite an increasingly larger share of female audiences (nearly 50%), the superhero-movie genre remains a male character's game. Marvel Studios has shown no signs that it has any intention of making a female-led superhero movie, and while Warner Bros. will be introducing Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman, we still don't know of any concrete plans to give her her own movie. There have been rumblings Jennifer Lawrence's increasing popularity would make a solo Mystique movie viable at Fox, but the studio hasn't green-lit anything.
Well now a rival studio may swoop in to beat them all to the punch.
Deadline is reporting that Sony Pictures has carved out a 2017 release date for a female-led superhero movie based on a character from the Spider-Man universe. We don't know who that character would be, but the studio does have contractual license to use the likes of Black Cat, Stunner, Firestar, Silver Sable and even Spider-Woman. We do know that the studio has hired Lisa Joy (who is working on the HBO Westworld series) to write the movie.
So, what do you think, comic fans? Are you happy that someone is finally planning to give a female superhero her own movie? And if so, who do you hope lands the honor?
