Matthew Lillard is best recognized for playing goofball characters like Stu from Scream or Cereal from Hackers or Shaggy from Scooby Doo, but playing the weird friend in the group is kind of behind him these days. Not only is he taking on small but crucial roles in movies like The Descendants and Trouble with the Curve, but he's also branched off into directing films. His first is called Fat Kid Rules the World and its funny, charming, expectation-defying story about teenagers dealing with life was a surprise hit at SXSW earlier this year, taking home the Audience Award in the Narrative Spotlight category.
The film has home video distribution settled for later this year, but the filmmakers are currently braving a new path and releasing the film theatrically themselves. They're partly using the theatrical-on-demand platform Tugg, as well as booking runs in New York and L.A. in early October, but you don't have to wait that long to see it!
Next week Lillard is hosting a free screening of Fat Kid Rules the World in L.A., and we've been given a pair of tickets to give away. Just leave a comment with a valid e-mail address to enter, and if you win we'll get you on the guaranteed seating list for Tuesday, September 11 at 7:30 p.m.
Do note, the screening and the Q&A afterward are entirely free, so anyone can pre-register for the event and go. If you want to skip the line, though, leave a comment below for a chance to win a spot on the list. Pretty simple way to see one of the best feel-good movies of the year. Also, we'll be posting an interview with Matthew Lillard next week, so keep an eye out for it. It's a good one, as we're sure his Q&A will be.
