You knew it was only a matter of time before a Family Guy movie inched closer to becoming a reality, and with Seth MacFarlane's Ted turning out to be one of the biggest movies of the year, chances are good that it won't be hard for him to make that movie a reality. The problem, like with The Simpsons (and MacFarlane readily admit this) is that it's ridiculously difficult to make an animated movie for a show that's still airing new episodes. It's why it took The Simpsons 20 years to make a movie, and it's why we may not see that Family Guy flick for at least another couple of years.
However, there's now a story for it -- a story MacFarlane claims would be impossible to create on television. He explains (via EW), “We do know what the Family Guy movie will be. The Simpsons movie, I thought, was hilarious, but the one criticism I would have is that it’s a story they probably could’ve done on TV. There could’ve been an episode that had that plotline,” he said. “That’s the challenge with animation. You pretty much can do any story you want, so what is the reason for the movie? We finally hit on the answer to that question, and it will be something that would be impossible to do on TV.”
Of course he's not revealing what it's about just yet, but one look at Ted leaves you to believe that whatever story they did come up with is purely R-rated and dirty as all hell. So while the chances of seeing a Ted sequel before a Family Guy movie are pretty great, fans of the show should expect to see that movie at some point, just not right now.
In addition to that Family Guy news, head over to EW to learn about a cool contest for aspiring filmmakers where they may have a chance to help host Seth MacFarlane present a few Oscars on stage at the Academy Awards.
