With shooting set to start in September, expect lots of casting news about Sylvester Stallone’s follow-up to his testosterone-laden action flick The Expendables in the next few weeks. The first salvo has already been fired, thanks to David Varod, the CEO of NU Boyana studios – and the names on the list should have any action fan giddy with anticipation.
According to Varod, all of the following talents are involved with project: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, John Travolta, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis. Should this pan out to be true (and we’re taking this story with a golfball-sized grain of salt until we get some official confirmation…) it seems like The Expendables 2 could potentially trump the original film when it comes to casting awesomeness.
While we suspected Stallone, Statham, Lundgren, and Rourke would return for a sequel, it appears as though Stallone’s really pulling out all the stops in terms of potential casting for the second film – everyone on the list is someone fans wished had been involved when the first film was released. Of course, we’re disappointed that no one has gotten Steven Seagal involved (if only so we could watch him and Van Damme throw down once and for all. How cool it would it be to watch them square off after all the trash talk of years ago, only to have Chuck Norris saunter in and destroy the winner?), but maybe Seagal is Stallone’s ace-in-the-hole for the third film.
As Collider points out, don’t start penciling all of these names into the film yet – many could be in negotiations or merely be on Stallone’s wish list and may not ever be officially involved with the project. Others may have cameo appearances, like Schwarzenegger and Willis in the first film. This does bring up an interesting question, though – will we see more of Arnold now that he’s no longer a Governor? Only time will tell. In the meantime, what do you think of these casting rumors? Has Stallone missed anyone else you’d really want to see in the film? Opine in the comment section below.
