Just about a month ago, word got out that Shailene Woodley would not appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as Mary Jane Watson, despite having shot scenes for the film. Apparently the movie was in need of some trimming so the filmmakers made the choice to cut out MJ’s brief appearance.
Considering The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will feature the characters from the first film and also introduce us to Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Paul Giamatti’s the Rhino, Dane DeHaan’s Harry Osborn and Chris Cooper’s Norman Osborn and have a little something involving the Ravencroft Institute, a prison for supervillains, it does make sense that something had to go.
While talking about her March 2014 release Divergent at San Diego Comic-Con, Woodley took a moment to address her departure, explaining:
“Mary Jane was in four scenes – four scenes in the whole film, and it didn’t make sense. They’re introducing so many new characters; it really didn’t make sense to introduce such a vital character to the comic books in a movie that had so much else going on, so they’re holding off for future films.”
As Woodley pointed out, it would have been impossible to make use of the footage she shot in future films, but it still begs the question, why recast the role entirely?
If Mary Jane is introduced in the third Amazing Spider-Man and has a bigger presence, perhaps Woodley’s attachment to the Divergent franchise would keep her from making room in her schedule, but regardless of what the finer details of the situation are, Woodley insists, “That being said, [The Amazing Spider-Man 2] is one of the best scripts that I have ever read, and that’s not a lie.”
