The 2012 Tribeca Film Festival begins later this week, so that means films like Once in a Lullaby are gearing up for their big debut. Director Jonathan Kalafer’s first feature documentary focuses on the chorus from Public School 22. Yes, you know! The Staten Island students that hit it big with YouTube recordings of their songs and wound up performing at the 2011 Academy Awards ceremony.
Once in a Lullaby documents the kids’ journey from Staten Island to the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. While the trip is incredibly exciting, the young singers certainly feel the pressure, but with the guidance of musical director Gregg Breinberg they pull through lost voices and some homesickness, too.
