A movie called Europa Report filmed quietly earlier this year in Brooklyn, New York, and normally that wouldn't be noteworthy. Films are made quietly all over the country all year long, after all, and most are never even heard from. It's a tad more unusual, however, to film a movie about astronauts exploring Jupiter's moon Europa in Brooklyn. Even more unusual is that the film features a pretty stellar cast of fine international actors: Sharlto Copley (District 9), Michael Nyqvist (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days) and Daniel Wu (Tai Chi Zero). Intriguing project, no?
Unfortunately we don't really know a whole lot beyond that. The teaser trailer [via Coming Soon] doesn't clear much up, either, but it does look as though this will be another astronaut found-footage movie. And before that gives you too many Apollo 18 flashbacks, keep in mind the talent involved, and hold on to the hope that Europa Report has more in store than some spooky moon rocks.
Here's the setup taken from the film's viral website:
For decades, scientists have theorized the existence of liquid water oceans on Jupiter's moon, Europa. We've recently discovered new, captivating evidence that these subsurface oceans do exist and could support life.
We've sent six astronauts from space programs throughout the world on a three-year journey to Europa to explore its oceans and confirm these findings.
We're proud to be at the forefront of the effort to prove the existence of extraterrestrial life within our solar system, within our lifetimes.
