Book of Eli

Shovel Ready: Denzel Washington has made only occasional forays into science fiction (Virtuosity, Book of Eli), but he's in early talks to head back to the near future in Shovel Ready. He would play a professional assassin who is contracted to kill the daughter of a mad evangelist before changing his mind and becoming her protector. The project does not yet have a screenwriter hired nor director attached. [Deadline]

The Outsider: Tom Hardy will star as an American soldier who becomes a yakuza when he joins up with Japanese gangsters after World War II in The Outsider. Prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike is in negotiations to direct. He has vast experience with violence and yakuza, though his English-language productions have been limited to an episode of the TV series Masters of Horror and the phonetic pronunciation of English dialogue in Sukiyaki Western Django, which featured Quentin Tarantino in a small role. Hot Tub Time Machine 2: Casting is heating up for Hot Tub Time Machine 2, and it seems that the producers are drawing heavily from TV's Community. To be fair, Chevy Chase starred in the original film, so his return in the sequel is a no-brainer -- probably in another small role -- but the news that Gillian Jacobs, his talented former costar on the show, has landed the female lead is welcome indeed. Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson and Clark Duke are all set to return, with Adam Scott joining the fun. [Deadline]

Getaway Trailer: When his wife is kidnapped, Ethan Hawke is forced to commit a series of crimes by driving his sports car as fast and furiously as he can, joined by passenger/teen gun moll Selena Gomez, in the thriller Getaway. The first trailer makes it clear that actions take priority over words, even when some of those words are spoken by Jon Voight with a very distinctive and evil European accent. The movie opens on Labor Day weekend. [YouTube]
