Michel Gondry's movies invite audiences into fantastical worlds where linear time doesn't exist and nothing is quite like it seems. In his 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind we relive the memories of a troubled relationship by jumping in and out of the past with stars Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey. In order to bring Gondry's dizzying timeline to life, special effects were used out the wazoo, but the transitions were seamless. Buzz Image Group is the team responsible for the work, and they published a video giving a brief rundown on some of the movie's biggest FX moments.
The scene where Carrey's Joel Barish is seen in reverse, going back in time (on a couch), was a surprisingly simple effect with impressive results. The film's falling cars and collapsing house were more involved, but the team breaks it all down for us newbs. It's a great behind-the-scenes look at one of our favorite films and a reminder that CGI can be used to subtle, but magical effect when done right. [Spotted via Filmmaker IQ]
