Before he went full-time
Transformers, director
Michael Bay made comparatively understated films like the 2005 sci-fi thriller
The Island. OK,
The Island is actually as loud and action-packed as any Bay movie, but the story about two beings (Ewan McGregor and
Scarlett Johansson) who discover that they are clones being raised in a utopian setting for replacement body parts poses more existential questions than, say, giant robots from space.
The Island, one of Bay's better and underrated thrillers, is worth rediscovering when it makes its Blu-ray debut on June 21, just before Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon is released in theaters. Supplements include commentary by Bay, "Pre-visualization: Forward Thinking," "The Future in Action" and "The Making of The Island."
