Reel TV: 'Enormous' and 'Rubicon' Bring Giant Monsters and Navy SEALs to the Web

Mar 21, 2014

A few years ago a Web-series designation was kind of like the Internet equivalent of straight to video. Right or wrong, there was this stigma attached to the label that implied it was somehow a lesser way to deliver a story. Some seriously talent people have sunk their teeth into the format, though, and they've been slowly carving away at that notion. And now we've got the pilots for two new shows that are looking to embrace the format and chip away at the stigma even more.

The first is Enormous, a new series directed by BenDavid Grabinski (Cost of Living) and written by André Øvredal (Trollhunter). It takes place in a world that's somehow been overrun by giant monsters. They're not the only threat, though. There are also still humans around to take advantage of this postapocalyptic scenario, and so Enormous offers a sort of grand Mexican standoff between the good guys, the bad guys, and something with a really, really, really big eyeball. It's got a good cast and Grabinski injects it all with a sense of humor, which is a nice change of pace for postapocalyptic stories that are just dry and grim.

Enormous is actually the second pilot from the Machinima network to hit online recently. The other is Rubicon, an adaptation of a graphic novel that was cowritten by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Jack Reacher) and tells the story of some elite U.S. operatives who find themselves facing off against a Mexican drug cartel and the Yakuza, which are two things that sound like they'd be too silly when combined together, but we'd say director Christian Johnston pulls it off.

If you like either of the above, do share them with friends. These are pilots after all, and Machinima will only make more of them if fans show their support.
