Watch: 'End of Watch' Trailer Brings a Found Footage Look to a Cop Action Movie

May 03, 2012

If you loved the overall style of Act of Valor but wished the camera spent more time attached directly to its stars, then have we got a trailer [via IndieWire] for you: End of Watch, written and directed by David Ayer (Training Day, Harsh Times, Street Kings).

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star as two LAPD beat cops who have dreams of playing detective and end up busting down the door of a drug cartel operating in LA who, for some silly reason, don't like it when cops show up at their place. In over their heads, the pair apparently find themselves on the hitlist of every gang banger in LA looking to please the cartel by delivering their bloodsoaked badges. If that sounds a little similar to the general plot of S.W.A.T., that's not too surprising-- Ayer wrote that movie, too (cops behaving badly is kind of his thing).

Fortunately, End of Watch looks nothing like S.W.A.T. It does, however, look like a found footage action movie, though that's just an aesthetic choice and not a narrative one. And it's an interesting choice, at that, because the intimate and hectic look of the film has us more intrigued than its plot does.

End of Watch hits theaters on September 28th.
