It’s a commonly held bit of folk wisdom that one should “never say never,” but producer Emma Thomas says Christopher Nolan will never return to the Batman series in a new interview set to appear in the upcoming issue of SFX magazine.
Normally, we’d take the words of a producer about a sequel with a grain of salt – but given that Thomas is not only a producer on The Dark Knight Rises but also Nolan’s wife, we’re giving her words some pretty serious weight.
In the interview, she states that her husband couldn’t possibly be lured back to the Bat universe. “No, never,” she replies when the question comes up. When pressed, she then adds the following.
“No, that’s truly a never. I cannot imagine a world in which he would ever want to come back. At a certain point it’s fun to go off and do something different, you know. We’ve spent almost 10 years of our lives making Batman films. He was very excited about this film, and the story that he’d come up with, but I just cannot imagine that he would get that excited about another version of the same thing. The great thing about a trilogy is that it feels like you’ve got a beginning, a middle, and an end. It’s like an extended version of a regular film. Once you get into a fourth film then it’s just episodic, and I just can’t see him getting excited about making another film where basically you’re just wheeling in different villains.”
Those are some pretty bold words – but we believe her. Nolan was never going to tie himself down to a franchise for the long haul and it makes sense for him to get out now – while he’s a major talent and can demand creative control over any project that appeals to him. The big question now becomes "where does this franchise go from here?" We suspect there'll be lots of speculation about that in the weeks and months ahead...
