Eddie Murphy Will Make Another 'Beverly Hills Cop' Movie

Axel Foley will return!

A fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie has been in various stages of development for years. First as a movie with Brett Ratner that never happened, then as a TV show with Axel Foley's son that wasn't picked up. Then back to a big-screen sequel a few years ago, with piece by piece slowly being filled. After bringing on the writers of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie, Josh Appelbaum & Andre Nemec, Eddie Murphy and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have handed the franchise's directorial reigns to newcomers Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, a Belgian duo whose recent film Black did relatively well on the festival circuit last year. No release date set, but they're aiming to start production later this year.

With Black, writer-directors Arbi and Fallah delivered a gritty gang drama with Romeo & Juliet vibes. It's not exactly the tone of Beverly Hills Cop, but it appears Murphy and Bruckheimer want to tap back into the subtle grittiness that defined the first movie. The original Beverly Hills Cop is funny, but it means business.

The second Beverly Hills Cop did its best to stay true to the original's tone -- I happen to think it's one of the best action-comedy sequels ever made -- but by the time the third installment came around, they lost any edge the series once had and it came off as corny and tired.

Part four will attempt to return to the roots of the series by bringing it back "to its Detroit origins," according to Deadline. Finding the balance between action and humor will be the film's greatest task. This series is always at its best when it flashes some detective-story flavor.
