Frank Drebin is back! The iconic character, portrayed by the late Leslie Nielsen in the Naked Gun movies (and the Police Squad TV series), is coming back to a theater near you as Hollywood looks to reboot yet another beloved property.
With Nielsen having passed back in 2010, Paramount needs a new lead to play the bumbling cop – and has landed on The Hangover’s Ed Helms to bring the character to life for a new generation. Nielsen’s shoes are going to be hard to fill, but Helms could theoretically pull it off.
Reno 911 scribes Thomas Lennon and R. Ben Garant have been tasked with writing the update, which will reportedly put a new spin on the beloved franchise.
The three films in the series (spanning from 1988 through 1984) made over $200 million in domestic box office. Clearly, Paramount is hoping a reboot of the franchise can lead to even bigger returns. Should the first film take off, it’s safe to assume that this will morph into a franchise for Helms and the studio.
What do you think of this news? I’m having a hard time picturing anyone other than Leslie Nielsen as Frank Drebin. It’s difficult to envision Helms in this role, but I’m willing to give him a chance and see how it goes. The biggest question now is who plays Nordberg? I hear O.J. Simpson has a full schedule these days…
What do you think? Can you see Helms pulling this off?
