Dwayne Johnson Will Play a DC Comics Hero with All the Powers of Superman

Dwayne JohnsonDwayne Johnson has already played one of the strongest men on the planet in his upcoming action epic Hercules. Now there are rumors that he may take on the part of one of the strongest men in the entire universe for his next gig.

The actor -- who’s had lengthy, rumor-inspiring discussions with Warner Bros. and DC Comics -- appears to have finally landed a role in an upcoming superhero film. Johnson had previously been rumored to play antihero Lobo, but that project fell apart. He was also reportedly considered for villainous Black Adam – but that doesn’t appear to be in the cards, either.

No, it seems most likely that Johnson will play a hero – and if we were gamblers, we’d bet that the hero is none other than Shazam based on his comments this weekend.

The actor offered up the following hint in an interview with Total Film:

“I will say this. There's a character out there that we're going to announce very soon that I'm going to play, and I'll just say this: This character has the power of Superman, he can throw down. Just say the word. That's all I'm going to say."

This makes sense on a number of levels. First, DC and Warner Bros. already have a 2016 Shazam movie penciled into their upcoming release schedule. Second, Johnson has a proven track record for revitalizing action franchises with his massive presence (see G.I. Joe and Fast & Furious). Third, if there’s anyone in Hollywood who should be playing a superhero, it’s Johnson – who looks like he stepped right out of a comic book already.

While Shazam is not a character with the same level of popularity as Batman and Superman, Johnson’s involvement would make the character a much easier sell to casual comic movie fans.

All in all, we like the idea of Johnson in the role. Nothing’s been confirmed yet, but with Comic-Con right around the corner, we expect to hear more details soon. Watch Johnson’s video interview below.
