Dwayne Johnson Reteaming With 'Skyscraper' Director for 'Red Notice'

Dwayne Johnson Reteaming With 'Skyscraper' Director for 'Red Notice'

Feb 09, 2018

Everyone wants to work with Dwayne Johnson right now. That's understandable most of the time, but even more so right now as we're in the wake of his phenomenal sucess with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which just became the actor's highest-grossing movie domestically (without adjustment for inflation) and is also now his third-best worldwide.

Proving his popularity in Hollywood is the news from Deadline that another tentpole project saw heated bidding from nearly all the studios before landing with Universal Pictures and Legendary. The movie is called Red Notice, and it will again reunite Johnson with director Rawson Marshall Thurber (pictured above with Johnson and Kevin Hart), who helmed Central Intelligence and the upcoming Skyscraper.

The former was also a surprise hit, of a more modest size, while the latter just debuted a trailer during the Super Bowl and earned a lot of positive buzz in spite of the consensus that it looks like The Rock's own take on the Die Hard formula -- and who woudn't want that? Skyscraper was also made by Universal and Legendary, so it makes sense Red Notice would follow suit. Johnson seems to be a loyal actor, as Thurber is just one of a few directors he likes returning to over and over.

So what is Red Notice about? That's a good question. All we've been told is that it's an expensive "globe-trotting heist thriller" and will pair Johnson up with another star as co-lead (maybe his Central Intelligence and Jumanji co-star Kevin Hart?). There's obviously international interest in the original blockbuster idea, but otherwise no specifics have been revealed. Universal is aiming to get the thing in theaters sometime in 2020.

How does Johnson do it all? Deadline notes that he's cleared his schedule for this one to begin production in Spring 2019. Who knows which of his many other projects will be delayed as a result, but most of the movies we know he's on board for will be made before then. Jungle Cruise shoots this spring, his Fast and Furious spin-off with Jason Statham is likely after that. Then Sony is hoping to get a Jumanji sequel in theaters next Christmas.

Dwayne Johnson's not just the biggest star of the moment, he's also the hardest working.
