DVD Forecast: Release News for Predators, Fantasia and Avatar: Collector's Edition

Aug 30, 2010

Every Monday Blu-ray Bob gazes into his crystal ball and predicts what discs will be spinning in your DVD player in the upcoming months. This week’s forecast calls for some nasty aliens, dancing hippos and the return of the Na'vi.

The sequel Predators starring Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Alice Braga and Laurence Fishburne as abducted humans forced to face off against alien warriors lands on DVD and Blu-ray on October 19. This kick-ass entry in the long-running sci-fi series that began in 1987 with Predator finally gets the franchise back on track after two shaky Alien Vs. Predator flicks. Both the DVD and Blu-ray will contain commentary by producer Robert Rodriguez and director Nimród Antal, exclusive "Motion Comics" prequel vignettes voiced by the characters, and "De-Cloaking the Invisible: Alien Terrain." Blu-ray buyers also get additional "Motion Comics," several more behind-the-scenes featurettes, nine deleted and extended scenes as well as lots of BD-Live bells and whistles.

Disney's fantastic Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 are coming home in the Fantasia 2 Movie Collection on November 30. The set is available on either DVD or Blu-ray, but you won't be able to buy either movie separately. Fantasia includes audio commentaries, "Disney Family Museum," a newly discovered document revealing movie secrets and an interactive art gallery. Fantasia 2000 comes with the 2003 animated short Destino, a documentary on Destino, and a featurette on Walt Disney's inspiration for a sequel.

Are you ready to go back to the phosphorescent blue wonderland that is Pandora? Fox sure is with its second Avatar release—Avatar: Collector's Edition—which comes to DVD and Blu-ray on November 16. This edition will feature an extended cut of the movie with 16 additional minutes, including a deleted opening sequence on Earth. In addition to 45 minutes of other unfinished material, the discs will contain many behind-the-scenes and making-of featurettes. This will be the ultimate Avatar release until Fox readies its 3D Blu-ray of the film, a date for which has yet to be announced.

The Disappearance of Alice Creed stars Gemma Arterton as a millionaire's daughter who is kidnapped for ransom, but who refuses to play the docile victim. The British thriller is found on DVD and Blu-ray on November 23 with audio commentary by director J. Blakeson, storyboard featurettes and extended scenes with commentary.

Is anyone game for a sleepover from hell? Roger Corman's The Slumber Party Massacre Collection will keep your friends awake on October 5. The DVD set contains all three Slumber Party Massacre movies, a new three-part documentary and a photo gallery.
