Yesterday brought word from Jim Carrey that he was backing out of doing Dumb & Dumber 2 due to what he claims is a lack of interest from the studio. "I would have thought Dumb and Dumber Two was a no-brainer, after all it's implied in the title," Carrey said through his publicist. Meanwhile, fans cried foul -- proving a lot of people were interested in the sequel despite what Carrey or the studio was saying -- and there was a glimmer of hope that maybe all parties could be convinced to move ahead. Unfortunately, according to the other half of Dumb & Dumber, Jeff Daniels, that's not happening.
TMZ's cameras caught up with Daniels, who seemed to put a nail in the coffin of the Farrelly brothers sequel. "Don't you read the internet -- we're not doing it," Daniels shouted at the cameraman, adding, "It's all over the internet ... it's not happening." Of course Daniels said this with a sly smirk, either because there's more to it than we think or because it's pretty ridiculous how it all went down.
Could this be a publicity ploy to drum up interest in the sequel; maybe create a buzz a la Anchorman 2? Carrey has been known to pull stunts like this to promote himself and his projects, so maybe there is more to this than we're being told. Of course it's in our nature these days not to believe anyone who says anything what with how ahead of the curve the internet is, but we still hold out hope that this will come together at some point in the near future.
What do you think? Is this sequel really dead?
