Find Out What the 'Cabin in the Woods' Mastermind Is Doing Next

Drew GoddardDon’t look now, but we’ve got a second sci-fi blockbuster about an astronaut stranded in space entering development to sit alongside Alfonso Cuaron’s upcoming Gravity – so could another Deep Impact/Armageddon situation be brewing?

The Wrap has revealed that Cabin in the Woods mastermind Drew Goddard is currently in negotiations to write and direct an adaptation of The Martian – which will be based on an e-book by author Andy Weir. In that tale, an astronaut is stranded on Mars and must survive until help can arrive to save him. It’s being billed as a cross between Apollo 13 and Cast Away.

Sources close to the project insist that it’s nothing like Cuaron’s upcoming feature, which finds Sandra Bullock and George Clooney forced to survive in outer space when their ship is destroyed during a space walk.

To be fair, it does sound different. Surviving on Mars would be pretty terrifying, but floating around in the vastness of space like Clooney and Bullock sounds even worse. At least on Mars you’re on solid ground…

Goddard is a hot commodity in Hollywood these days – his work on Cabin in the Woods turned that modestly budgeted horror flick into a gargantuan hit (at least with horror fans), and he’s also been involved with titles like Cloverfield and Spielberg’s upcoming Robopocalypse.

As fans of Goddard’s work, we’re hoping he signs on for this one. The premise sounds intriguing and like it’s right in the writer’s wheelhouse. Plus, if nothing else, it would be pretty cool to have a double feature with this film and Gravity at some point in the not-too-distant future.
