Start packing your bags, Shrek – you’re moving to New Jersey…
DreamWorks Animation has announced the launching of a theme park/retail destination at the American Dream complex at New Jersey’s Meadowlands. The enclosed indoor facility will feature shopping, theme rides, a water park, ice skating, skiing, and movie theaters amongst other things – all centered around characters and themes from DreamWorks films like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, and Madagascar.
DreamWorks Animation boss Jeffrey Katzenberg says the park will be “a one-of-a-kind retail and entertainment destination in North America." He adds that the location will, “incorporate DreamWorks Animation characters, storytelling and technology into a unique and innovative family entertainment experience at the venue." Sounds interesting.
This isn’t the first time DreamWorks has toyed with opening a theme park of its own. The studio reportedly considered a location in Dubai at one point, but those plans fell through. While it’s certainly nice to see them sticking closer to home, one has to wonder if families will decide to spend their vacations in New Jersey rather than visiting Disney parks in California or Florida – or if the Super Bowl MVP will ever utter the phrase “I’m going to the ‘Shrek-Land’!”
No official launch date has been revealed, but we suspect it will be a few years before customers can queue up for Mr. Shrek's Wild Ride.
