If you’ve seen any of MGM’s James Bond Blu-rays then you were likely left shaken and stirred by their quality and bonus features. The cash-strapped studio didn’t pull any punches when transferring its Bond treasures to high definition, and the titles have been very popular as both individual releases and in three collection packs.
We’re still waiting for some of our favorite Bond movies (ahem, A View to a Kill) to get the royal Blu treatment. Instead of releasing the remaining 007 titles before Christmas, however, MGM has made the curious decision to instead bundle 10 previously available movies in the James Bond Blu-ray Collection for a November 3 release. You get some classics (Dr. No, Goldfinger, Thunderball, From Russia With Love), some cheesier entries (The World Is Not Enough, Moonraker), Roger Moore’s voodoo romp with Jayne Seymour (Live and Let Die), a lackluster entry with an awesome Sheena Easton theme song (For Your Eyes Only), Pierce Brosnan’s last Bond movie with a God-awful Madonna song (Die Another Day), and one of Daniel Craig’s Bourne-again Bonds (Quantum of Solace).
So you’ve got a decent sampling of the three actors who played Bond—Sean Connery, Roger Moore and Craig—in a handsome set worthy of a dashing secret agent. It’s a great introduction for a Blu-ray newbie who doesn’t have any Bond BDs already, but the rest of us are waiting for MGM to turn the remaining Bonds Blu. The world (and this set) is not enough.
