Van Damme Reveals Plans for 'Double Impact' Sequel

Aug 10, 2012

Double Impact posterBlast-from-the-past day continues here at – first it was the potential return of Bill & Ted, and now we bring you the latest on Jean Claude Van Damme’s attempt to turn 1991’s Double Impact into an action franchise. What’s next – the return of Commando?

Van Damme, who’s currently doing publicity for his appearance in The Expendables 2, told website Next Movie that he’s reteamed with screenwriter Sheldon Lettich to pen a follow-up adventure for the pair of butt-kicking siblings who wind up on opposite sides of the law.

“I wrote the script with a friend of mine, Sheldon – he [cowrote] Bloodsport and Double Impact with me. Hopefully, somebody smart enough, like an agent or a producer, can put that back together… I’m excited about it, you know?”

It may require a bit more than a savvy producer or agent to get the project up and running since there are also rights issues involving the original film that would have to be worked out before production could commence.

Van Damme seems undaunted by this and shares a bit of what he envisions a sequel would look like.

“I came up with a great story set in Los Angeles. [Chad] is a producer, making pictures with a big house behind him. Alex is gonna go on vacation and has some problems with the Triads. Why? Because Chad went to Hong Kong and to get some loan money using [Alex's] face, all of that bulls**t. And Alex comes [to Los Angeles] to see Chad and he’s full of s**t, has a girl pregnant, and she’s the sister of the big boss from South Central. It’s like Double Impact in Los Angeles.”

Lettich has since come along and clarified some things, noting that most of the film would actually be set in Hong Kong and China for lower production costs, adding that there are new characters in the mix too. He also hopes that his cowriter won’t spoil more of the plot.

Van Damme seems ready to make an attempt to turn his appearance in The Expendables 2 into a full-fledged career renaissance. Will Double Impact help “the muscles from Brussels” turn back time or should JCVD be exploring new action territory instead of updating past features? Opine below.
