Robert Downey Jr. and company are currently hard at work creating Iron Man 3 -- the newest entry in Marvel’s popular Iron Man series. If you somehow forgot about that (which can happen with all the Avengers/Amazing Spider-Man/The Dark Knight Rises hype raging across the Internet), then perhaps this new concept art will help push Tony Stark and his metal-clad alter ego back to the front of your thoughts.
Marvel unveiled the new artwork today, and revealed that attendees at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con will receive their very own print of the image if they stop by the Marvel booth. The piece, which was created by artist Robert Meinerding, features Robert Downey Jr. preparing to throwdown with some well-armed soldier-types.
What’s intriguing to comic film fans is the way that Downey’s Tony Stark character has only part of the Iron Man suit on in the image. We know that Iron Man 3 will be based on Warren Ellis’ Iron Man: Extremis series, wherein Stark had the suit bonded to him through the use of nanotechnology – meaning it basically functioned like a second skin. It appears that he’s in the process of donning it in this concept art. This is, as far as we can tell, the first hint of how that might look in the finished film.
What do you guys think of the art? We’re pretty excited about it and what it hints at – which is a good thing since some of us were kind of disappointed with the second Iron Man film. Share your thoughts with us below.
Iron Man 3 is scheduled to launch into theaters everywhere on May 3rd, 2013.
