It's no secret that it takes a lot of work (and money, and then more money) to make a movie, and so when that movie is done the folks in charge like to have an idea of how it'll play with moviegoers. What usually happens is they test it for various audiences, and if, say, a film's ending is testing poorly, they'll consider changing it. This is what happened on the movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, and it was quite the source of contention among those who wrote and starred in the comedy about rival dodgeball team captains (Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller).
See, the original ending was ballsy enough to actually let the bad guy win, as if to hilariously spit in the face of all those inspirational underdog sports stories where the ragtag team of misfits somehow pulls it together long enough to win the big game. As you'll see in this amazing alternate ending, the good guys don't win. In fact, the bad guys win, they celebrate (in slo-mo) and then the credits roll. It's almost as satisfying as the punch-in-the-gut ending for The Last American Virgin, except that movie takes it one step further by lingering on our defeated hero as he cries in his car on the way home.
Naturally audiences did not like this ending, and so against the writer-director's wishes they reshot the finale to make it so that Vince Vaughn's underdogs win the big game. But in a nod to the behind-the-scenes controversy, they put Ben Stiller in a fat suit for a postcredits scene that involves him shaking his giant man boobs to Kelis' "Milkshake" song. Before that, though, he pokes fun at the audience who made them alter the ending in the first place. "I hope you're happy now," he barks. "Good guy wins, bad guy loses. Big freaking surprise. I love happy endings. That's the problem with American cinema -- you can't handle any complexity in it. Don't make me think -- I just want to be entertained!"
Watch the nasty postcredits scene below, which is stupid and amusing, but also a pretty mean smackdown of the general moviegoing audience. Ironically, most people were probably too glued to Ben Stiller's man boobs to notice they were being made fun of.
And in case you forget just how soul crushing the ending to The Last American Virgin is, you can watch that below. Hey, at least this movie had the guts to stick with it.
