Disc Wars II: Toshiba Strikes Back

Not so long ago in a galaxy not at all far away, a company named Toshiba championed a high-def format called HD DVD that competed in a bitter format war with the Sony-developed Blu-ray Disc. We all know how that played out: Toshiba finally pulled the plug on its HD DVD products and abandoned high-definition players altogether to focus on upconverting standard DVD machines (insert laughter here). It seemed like sour grapes, but maybe Toshiba isn’t a sore loser after all. In a recent meeting with shareholders in Tokyo, Toshiba president Atsutoshi Nishida "did not rule out" the possibility of a Blu horizon in his company’s future. "It makes no sense to decide not to enter the Blu-ray market simply because we lost the DVD-format war,” he said. “We cannot change the fact that we lost, but we would like to keep our options open.”
