'Game of Thrones' TV Team Plan Their First Feature Film

Apr 10, 2014

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have been consumed by running HBO's excellent Game of Thrones for years now, which means they haven't exactly had time to do any feature-film work, but that will all change soon. No, we're not getting a Game of Thrones movie anytime soon (though HBO did recently green-light another two seasons of the show), but instead the creators of the hit television series are turning their sights on another book they'd like to write and direct.

Written by Stephen Hunter, Dirty White Boys is a crime novel about three men who escape prison and the police who are tasked with tracking them down. That doesn't exactly sound like it's in the ballpark of the guys who have spent years bringing a fantasy world to life. So what attracted them to the book? As it turns out, it was all in the opening line.

Benioff and Weiss told Deadline that they were casually talking with other writers about great opening lines in novels, when Scott Frank (Minority Report) told them about Dirty White Boys. They tracked it down, read the opening line, and were instantly hooked. So what was it? Brace yourselves, it's not very pretty:

“Three men at McAlester State Penitentiary had larger penises than Lamar Pye, but all were black and therefore, by Lamar’s own figuring, hardly human at all.”

Wow, that is indeed a helluva opening line, and apparently it paves the way for a very gritty story about despicable men trying to flaunt the law, and the man who tries to rein them in.

As for when Benioff and Weiss will actually be able to make the movie? Unfortunately there's no date there. It may have to wait until Game of Thrones has been wrapped up entirely (which they anticipate being seven seasons), but either way, they've pinned down Dirty White Boys as their next project together and we very excited to see what they do with it.
