-- The Coen Bros. will be teaming back up with producer Scott Rudin for their loosely adapted biopic about coffeehouse folk culture maven, Dave Van Ronk. Rudin previously worked with the Coens on No Country for Old Men and True Grit, which should put the filmmakers in line for another lucrative Oscar win. Van Ronk has been renamed Llewyn Davis for Inside Llewyn Davis, which will center around the musician's life in 1960's New York City. Known as the Uncle of Greenwich Village, Van Ronk promoted and mentored iconic talents like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Phil Ochs. He was also an activist and accomplished guitarist. The Coens will be drawing from the folk hero's posthumously published memoir, 2005's The Mayor of MacDougal Street. [via: Variety]

-- Paul Dano will be paying a young Karl Rove in Richard Linklater's College Republicans. Dano played the conniving preacher in Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood – a role that seemed a little too big for the actor at times. Rove was George W. Bush's Senior Advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff and was nicknamed "Turd Blossom" by the 43rd President. Producer Maya Browne told TheWrap that College Republicans "…is about when Karl Rove and Lee Atwater first met, which is when Karl Rove ran for president of the College Republicans, and that's when they sort of discovered dirty tricks. It's interesting to see them take that journey together." The screenplay comes from Black List writer Wes Jones. [via: TheWrap]

-- David Koepp, who was recently in the news because of the Premium Rush/Ultimate Rush debacle, will be writing the script for the remake of The Thin Man. Bad Boys II writer Jerry Stahl was originally assigned to the screenplay, but apparently nothing was ever written. Johnny Depp, who aside from starring in the film is also producing the project, will re-team with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides director Rob Marshall for the re-telling of the 1934 classic film. The original movie is actually based on a book about a couple who investigate crimes together. The story inspired several screen sequels and a TV series. The female lead has yet to be cast, and there's also talk about including some musical numbers – something that is familiar to Marshall who also directed Chicago and Nine. [via: Deadline]
