Did You Know: Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow Was Originally Named After Another Actor?

Aug 19, 2015

This past weekend at Disney's D23 Expo, Johnny Depp surprised fans when he came dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow to promote the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, due out on July 7, 2017.

Here he is chummin' it up with Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Harrison Ford backstage. Caption this as you wish.

A fun little tidbit regarding Captain Jack is that the character was originally named after another actor who screenwriter Stuart Beattie wanted for the role: Hugh Jackman. “I initially wrote that character with Hugh Jackman in mind,” he once told Fox News. “Hence the name Captain JACK Sparrow.”

At the time, Jackman wasn't the international star that he is now. Yes, he was beginning to break out in Bryan Singer's X-Men series, but it would still take a few years before the Aussie actor exploded onto the Hollywood scene in a number of different ways. Hence, Disney went to the more popular Depp for the part.

Funnily enough, all these years later, Hugh Jackman is finally getting the chance to play a pirate in a different movie. He'll be squaring off against a young boy named Peter as the nefarious Blackbeard in Joe Wright's fantastical-looking Pan, due out October 9.

Check him out in the trailer below.

Who would you rather see play Captain Jack Sparrow -- Johnny Depp or Hugh Jackman?
