First Look: Sacha Baron Cohen Channels Saddam Hussein in The Dictator

Jun 09, 2011

Get your Halloween costume party ideas list out because the first image of Sacha Baron Cohen in his Saddam Hussein-inspired costume for The Dictator has arrived online and it's ... afrolicious. Inspired (partly) by the book Zabibah and the King (written by Hussein), The Dictator is a comedy about a Hussein-like dictator who's secretly replaced by a goat herder and sent off to New York City in search of the meaning of life ... and, according to the official description, to "ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed." Anna Faris stars as an organic store owner who shows him around and helps open his eyes to a whole new world.

It'll be interesting to see how this turns out now that Cohen has dropped the character trickery, and is going for a straight scripted narrative instead of trying to trick other people into believing his latest wacky character is real. He'll still be playing in familiar territory -- what with the whole foreign figure fish-out-of-water-in-America theme -- but perhaps he'll find more success going this route after Bruno didn't do so well.

The Dictator, directed by Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno),  will arrive in theaters on May 11th, 2012, perhaps just in time to premiere at next year's Cannes Film Festival.
