Disney has been an enthusiastic supporter of Blu-ray from the beginning, and its titles are some of the most breathtaking BDs out there. Don’t mess with Mickey—the Mouse set the bar and continues to raise it. Although the flawless Sleeping Beauty
are already on store shelves, the studio has now formally announced its Diamond Collection
, which includes those titles and 12 more of Disney’s classic animated films. Each will be meticulously restored for full high-definition picture and sound, and the special features promise to push the limits of Blu-ray technology. "Because today's family rooms are more technologically advanced and consumer expectations are higher than ever, we are excited to announce the launch of the Diamond Collection,” said Bob Chapek, president of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. “We believe that the collection offers consumers the opportunity to enjoy these timeless classics like never before, and underlines Disney's commitment to continue to bring the best quality product and immersive experiences into the home."
The next gem to arrive will be Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs on October 6, followed by two titles per year for the next several years. Beauty and the Beast and the double feature Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 are lined up for 2010, followed by The Lion King, Bambi, Cinderella, Lady and the Tramp, Peter Pan, The Little Mermaid, 101 Dalmations and Jungle Book between 2011 and 2015. Disney certainly takes its time and treasures its classics, but…2015? If a new technology becomes commonplace between now and then (3D in the home, Ultra HDTV), Disney might have more diamonds to mine.
