Who wants to bring Antichrist home? No, not Damien from The Omen series—that little devil has been available on DVD and Blu-ray for some time now. We’re talking about Lars von Trier’s horror film that became one of the most controversial and polarizing movies of the year. In Antichrist, He (Willem Dafoe) and She (Charlotte Gainsbourg) are having passionate sex while their young son falls out an open window. The grief-stricken couple travel to a cabin called Eden where they had spent time with their son the previous summer. Here matters get surreal, sexually charged and explicitly violent as He and She try to exorcise their personal demons.
The ecumenical jury at the Cannes Film Festival gave Antichrist a special “anti-award,” calling it “the most misogynistic movie from the self-proclaimed biggest director in the world.” At least four people fainted during the premiere as well, while others have called it a “grotesque masterpiece” and “a self-therapeutic journey into your own darkest fears.”
So there you have it—one man’s trash is another man’s therapy. You can decide what Antichrist means to you when Artificial Eye releases it on DVD and Blu-ray on January 11. Special features include what-is-sure-to-be-fascinating commentary by von Trier, interviews with the two lead actors and several making-of featurettes--as well as one titled “Antichrist—Chaos Reigns at the Cannes Film Festival.”
