This past January, we wrote a feature chronicling some of the best upcoming horror films in 2014. Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us from Evil made that list – and today you can see why with this look at the film’s official teaser trailer.
Derrickson, who’s best known for giving us the creepy Sinister (one of the best horror films of 2012), teams up with Eric Bana and Edgar Ramirez to adapt New York police officer Ralph Sarchie’s true-crime tale Beware the Night. Bana plays Sarchie, who joins Ramirez’ “renegade priest” to investigate a case that the priest insists involves demonic activity.
As expected, the trailer looks great – it’s got the spooky stuff covered in spades, and Bana looks believable as a cop whose faith is tested while he battles supernatural forces. Clearly Sony has high hopes for this one, giving it a prestigious July 2 release date. Can Deliver Us from Evil replicate the success of last summer’s The Conjuring and show that horror films can rake in big bucks in blockbuster season? We won’t know until later this year, but if this trailer is any indication, then the answer is likely to be “yes."
