DC Buzz: More 'Shazam' Info, Martian Manhunter Rumors, and Supergirl

Sep 04, 2014

Black Adam DC comicsWith Marvel kicking butt and taking names all over the globe, it’s easy to forget that DC Comics and Warner Bros. are still in the superhero movie game. That could be changing though – and to prove it, we’ve got lots of new DC-related news to share with you today.

The biggest news in the DC universe this week is undoubtedly the casting of Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam in the upcoming Shazam movie. We’ve now learned that New Line will produce the film, and President Toby Emmerich has offered up the following insights about where things are and where they’re heading.

Concerning where Shazam will fit into the greater tapestry of comic films, and what its tone will be, Emmerich offered up these observations.

“It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It's a DC comic, but it's not a Justice League character, and it's not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”

Emmerich went on to add “It will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor. But the stakes have to be real."

And about that Johnson casting?

“The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne's take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun."

The Rock has been a pretty compelling villain in the past – this could be just the thing that helps DC start closing the gap with Marvel. Johnson as Black Adam could be DC’s equivalent of Tom Hiddleston as Loki. [via Coming Soon]

Benedict Cumberbatch rumored for two major DC roles

Cumberbatch star trek

Don’t look now, but Benedict Cumberbatch could be adding another high-profile role to his already impressive resume.

Rumors are swirling that that Sherlock actor is up for two parts in DC’s slate of upcoming films. One has the actor playing Martian Manhunter in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and potentially taking the character into the Justice League movie. The other has him playing an unspecified villain in the upcoming DC mash-up. The thing is, both can’t be true.

Cumberbatch himself has played coy when asked about the gossip, simply stating that he’d let the Martian Manhunter rumor run its course, and that he’d heard nothing about the bad guy role he’s supposedly up for.

Until we know more, I’d consider both of these as pure conjecture. [via Blastr]

Supergirl flying to a TV near you?

Supergirl

Marvel may be the dominant comic force at the box office, but there’s no denying that DC rules the roost on the small screen – and it's apparently looking to expand its influence if rumors of a Supergirl television series pan out.

According to speculation, TV producer Michael Green is currently exploring the option of bringing the character to television. This makes sense on multiple levels – the first being that this would give DC a series that actually focuses on a female lead character in the male-dominated superhero market.

It also makes sense since Green has been a producer on Gotham and Smallville, while writing for Green Lantern and the upcoming The Flash. We could see this happening, but we’re not entirely convinced that Supergirl would be a hit with the masses. Time will tell. [via Bleeding Cool]
